"To help Guatemalan schoolchildren break the cycle
of poverty through education."
Alter High School Thespians are sponsoring a school in the Quetzaltenango region of Guatemala.
The Quetzaltenango region is economically depressed, with 80% of the population living below the poverty line. The official rate of adult illiteracy is 28.5%, but this includes the city of Xela, where people are better educated. If you look at the rural area only, the rate of illiteracy climbs above 50%. The economy is rooted primarily in agriculture. One of the goals of our project is to make sure that none of today's schoolchildren end up as illiterate adults.
The entire 2003-2004 Evening of Theatre Sports Schedule will benefit Cooperative for Education's efforts in Guatamala. 100% of the proceeds from these improv competitions will go towards the sponsorship of our school in Guatamala. If you would like more information or would like to contribute please email troupe sponsor Bryan Wallingford, or visit the Cooperative for Education website.
